Kids-In-Mind: Movie Reviews for Parents

When I was a nanny in Portland I networked quite a bit with other caretakers and educators. It was great to get the support and to share ideas. It was at a dinner with a teacher-friend of mine that Kids In Mind was brought up. Apparently this friend was highly involved with the site when it first started and was trying to get the word out so people would use it.

I checked it out at the time and was impressed with how user-friendly and informative it was. I used it often for quite a while to "pre-screen" movies so I could show them to the kids I worked with.

Now, as a parent, I have even less time to sit and watch every movie to be able to judge whether I think it's appropriate for my child. It was when that thought crossed my mind today that I remembered the website and figured I should share the wealth, so to speak.

On the main page of Kids In Mind, they list all the movies that have been newly reviewed. You can also search for movies with the "search" box or alphabetically across the top of the page.

When you click through to a specific movie, they give it a rating for Sex/Nudity, Violence/Gore, and Profanity. For each subject (and this is my favorite part), they least every specific instance in which there was Sex, Nudity, Violence, Gore, and Profanity. Pretty awesome. Also, they go over discussion topics that the movie might bring up for your kiddo and the message of the movie.

I think the site is so handy for being able to be fully knowledgeable about a movie before sitting down with your child to watch it. I wish I had used this for when I showed one of my kids (a 2 year old) the movie Ponyo, when it first came out. I LOVE the movie now but at the time I hadn't seen it; I had only heard that it was loosely based on The Little Mermaid. Well, the movie has really ominous music and some pretty scary themes for a 2-year-old. Let's just say that she didn't like it... and neither did her parents when she told them.

It is definitely worth taking a look, if you haven't checked it out before.
