"On the Night You Were Born" is a great picture book written by Nancy Tillman. Many people with young children will know this book well as it is pretty popular but I though I'd give my personal opinion.
I just read this to Little A for the first time a few days ago. I guess that's not entirely true... When I was pregnant I would pick it up from the library and read it to her through my belly but honestly, that just doesn't do it justice. I think one of my favorite parts of the book is the astounding artwork. Little A, who is currently 3 months old, was enthralled with the vibrant, beautiful pictures. I was able to read through it 3 times, her full attention the whole time.
The words themselves are not in the typical sing-songey pattern that you see in a lot of picture books these days, however the tone is very magical and whimsical.
"So whenever you doubt just how special you are and you wonder who loves you,
how much and how far, listen for the geese honking high in the sky.
(They're singing a song to remember you by.)"
I love how empowering the message is. It tells the child how unique and special they are; that they are loved and cherished. Although Little A can't understand the words just yet, I really feel like the tone of the book allows her to understand the message.
I highly recommend this book to any parent of a 0-5 year old. It will be a good read for both of you. Just keep the tissues at hand because if you're anything like me, you'll need them.
